page 2 "Bro. Calvin's Comments" Out of my comfort zone. That's how I feel from late Tuesday, July 8th until late Sunday, July 13th. After receiving a call stating that LBC Disaster Relief Chaplains are being activated, I became really busy. I'm making calls, I'm receiving calls. I'm making a packing list. I'm coordinating meeting the other chaplains, determining a route to Wapello, Iowa, making sure that someone is preaching and teaching while I'm gone, and taking care of family matters. All during this time I keep thinking, "why am I the guy being called?" And I'm dealing with the uncertainty of ministry that I don't feel fully prepared for. I feel the weight of responsibility. Making my packing list, checking it five times, I'm now ready to go. I forget all the pressure as I watch a beautiful summer sunrise. In Ruston, I pick up one of our chaplain team. While between Little Rock and Memphis, I contact our fourth team member and figure out where we'll meet in Memphis. After leaving the house at 5:15 a.m., we finally arrive in Wapello, Iowa at 11:30 p.m. Our fourth team member and his church member who's with him arrive at 1:30 a.m., two hours after getting turned around in the corn fields of western Illinois. The team gets up about 7 a.m., eats breakfast and heads to Oakville with Howard, a chaplain from Ohio. By Friday afternoon, we have a plan and we're putting it into action. But I still feel out of my comfort zone. Four rookie chaplains, tired from our 19 hour trip, and I feel unsure of myself. Yet we're out there, involved and engaged in the Lord's work-listening, praying, laughing, crying, handing out cold water, ice, and snacks. Back at the church where we're staying, we're building relationships and encouraging tired disaster relief teams. But something happens on Sunday, July 13th. After 8:30 p.m. I moved into a secure, peaceful zone (not a comfort zone). I move out of a performance and perception mind set to a presence mind set. I'm listening for the Lord to lead me in this ministry, I'm desiring to be where He wants me to be, to say what he wants me to say, to be continually in His presence while I'm in the presence of Oakville and Wapello citizens and SBC Disaster Relief Crews. From Sunday night on, I have more personal interaction with citizens and crews, confident that I am who God wants me to be, where God wants me to be, equipped to do what God wants to do, and absolutely confident that God would guide me and supply me for everything I am to do (Proverbs 3:5-12, Phil. 4:12-13, 19-20). You may not be in your comfort zone right now. Instead of worrying about your performance or how you're perceived, place yourself in God's presence. Listen for His voice through Scripture and Spirit. Walk in the light of the Lord. Join the Lord in His work. You see, when you're out of your comfort zone, you're in a place where you can overcome by faith. Look up to the Lord for your help and strength (Psalm 121:1-2) Bro. Calvin
